CHAPTER 13
Angel couldn't keep still. He set his mug on the bench and began to pace the living room, rubbing a hand on the back of his neck. "His work went beyond the norms of humanity...if one person ran fast, Allwood wanted him to run faster. If one person was quick at learning, Allwood wanted to make him even smarter."
"All using genetics? DNA?" Charlie's gaze followed his movements. "But how? You said you had been reduced to a simplistic life. That everything we see around us in the twenty-first century was alien to you and unbelievable."
"These were secrets Allwood kept close to the vest." Angel shrugged. "But we saw the results of his experimentationâthe physical and mental ruination of vulnerable human beings, and to what end? Who was this improvement for? Beyond trying to improve how we lived our lives, Allwood seemed bent on an improved human."
"That sounds horrific." Images of the Nazis and their medical experiments on Jews and others in their clutches ran through her mind. History repeating itself, even hundreds of years into the future.
"Some in my village actually sought him out for help with their own ailments or perceived imperfections. He had an ability to hone in on people's weaknesses and convince them he could help." He paused his steps and stared down at his empty hands. "One morning I woke to do my chores in the barn, when it was discovered my own sister had run off to join the Genesis Project."
A sudden coldness hit her core.
Gently, between his fingers, he rubbed a leaf on a rubber plant beside the bench. His voice dropped several notches. "I had no idea Risa had been swayed by Allwood's speeches."
"Risaâ" She lifted a hand to her mouth. It couldn't be. His sister?
"She bought into his ideas and had kept it from me, her own brother." His gaze became unfocused. "I thought we had been close. That we shared everything. I was the one who encouraged her to go to his speech in the first place. But he had a hold over her, and I had no idea how strong." He tore the leaf off the rubber plant and crushed it in his fingers.
She sat quietly, but her mind raced to make connections, to understand what he was telling her.
"I found the notes after she'd run off. She'd been corresponding with Allwood." He scooped up his coffee mug and dropped it into the sink. "God, why didn't I stop her?" White knuckled hands gripped the porcelain edge.
Charlie joined him in the kitchen, set her mug in the sink next to his, and settled a hand on his back. "She was a grown woman. She could make up her own mind."
"But I'm her brother." He shrugged off her touch. "I should've kept her safe from that madman."
"You couldn't have knownâ" Her hand hung in the air. How could she comfort him? Bring peace to his tortured mind?
"Yes, I could have, Charlie." He whipped open the dishwasher and flung both mugs into it, slammed it shut, and then whirled to face her.
